Have you heard this quote before? It’s been around for a while and is attributed to Woody Allen:

“If you want to make God laugh tell Him your plans”.

This quote to me could also be:

“If you don’t want results tell you fitness coach your plan.”

To be honest, unless you are in crazy good ninja shape your plan sucks.

Really. Think about it. You’re 40 and 75 lbs overweight. Why would you tell your trainer what “works” for you? Why would you try the same thing that you have done 100 times and has NEVER worked before? Crazy, right?

Imagine a big, unsightly rock in your yard. It’s been there for YEARS. Every 365 days or so (usually around January 1st) you decide that rock needs to go. Each 365 days you go to the rock and push and pull and try and try yet the rock doesn’t move.


Maybe, stick with me here, MAYBE you need a NEW PLAN. Maybe your plan didn’t work last year but this is the year. This is the year that rock is going to more.

Or perhaps you need a new plan. What if you were to hire a dude with a truck….

Just a thought.

I know. Far fetched example, right?

It’s the same type of dealio in fitness.

I’ve been doing this a long, long time. It’s very rare that a week doesn’t go by where someone tells me what he or she needs to do to get results yet I’m staring at a person that is either overweight or sick or out of shape.

Listen. I’m not judging people nor do I want to be an asshole about stuff like this. If this is you then I’m not calling you a bad person. It’s just FLAWED THINKING, plain and simple.

I’ll take it a step further. Probably more often then people tell a trainer their plans they don’t tell anyone at all and that is worse. When you only tell yourself then there is no one to try to talk you out of your crazy idea.

Stop that madness people. Truly. Stop the madness.

You want results? Talk to, AND LISTEN TO, someone who knows what the hell they are doing.

Before I close out I want to share a specific example of this that is a tough one for me. In all seriousness it breaks my heart to see people struggle with their health BECAUSE they refuse to trash their plan and listen to someone who has a plan that actually works.

I while back man joined our gym. He was determined to lose weight and had probably 80 or so pounds to lose. He came maybe 4 or 5 times and quit. The last time that he came he had a conversation with Teresa about his diet. He basically told Teresa what he was doing and why it works for him. His plan had worked for 4 years.


So your “diet” has “worked” for 4 years?


This man hasn’t been back since and it’s a shame. Teresa tried her best to guide him in a better direction but his plan was solid in his eyes (because of course it “worked” so many times before) so he was going to follow his shitty plan…again.

He was going to keep pushing that big ass rock in the front yard that wouldn’t move.

It all boils down to this: Your plan isn’t working.

If you want results you really need to lower your walls and let someone help you. Find a good coach and listen to what he or she has to say.
