Pushing past your limits

Check this out. Today I am going to use me doing 100 straight double-unders yesterday as a lesson that will give you value. Maybe this seems far fetched; maybe not. Honestly, I don’t care. There is a lesson here. It’s a powerful one for sure.

Let me start by saying that, despite our gyms name, there are limits. There are limits for sure. There are limits in an area of your life. Just thin one area though. What area? YOUR PAST.

What you have done in the past is your limit. Your future on the other hand…that’s a whole ‘nother ball game.

Use your past to determine your limits then push past those limits and establish new limits. 

Double-unders. A double-unders is a jump rope variation where the rope goes around twice for each jump. It’s a tough move to execute and tough move to learn how to do. If you’ve never done a double under but have watched the CrossFit games and think it looks easy then I dare you to give them a try.


Yeah, pretty much.

I am not ashamed to admit that it’s taken me a long time to get good at double-unders.

Yesterday I did 100 straight for the first time.

The first time I did more then one I think I did 7.

One day I hit a grove and got 19. Bam!

Another day I pushed and struggled but I got to 24 before I received another welt on my leg.

Many lashes, much frustration and a couple of jump ropes thrown across the room got me to 54 on a hot summer afternoon.

A couple of months later a new high water mark was established when I suffered through 77. I felt like I had won the CrossFit Games.


89 was the next limit. So damn close…

Are you kidding me? Did I really get to 97 one day 2 weeks ago? Indeed I did. WTF.

Then yesterday. In the middle of workout was 100 double unders. I did 25 box jumps, 50 ring rows, 75 sit-ups….then I picked up my rope. Took a breath and started.

Mind you, my LIMIT was 97. I had never done 100 non-stop but I knew if I could do 97 what is 3 fucking double-unders anyway.



I did 100 straight and ran out the door to do a 1.5 mile run….


The lesson: If you do a little of something you can do a lot. It’s as simple as that. Whatever your limit has been does not matter. It’s just a line in the sand for you to cross. It may be a battle. It may be hard but YOU CAN DO IT.

It doesn’t matter your goal CHIP AWAY at it. If you keep working and keep moving forward then you will get there.

I did my first double-under in 2012. During the summer of 2014 I decided to try to learn how to be proficient. Now I can do 100. It took some time and some pain but I did it.
