There are 4 simple keys to weight loss. If you pay attention to all 4 then you will learn how to lose weight and keep it off for good.

As a personal trainer and fitness coach for the last 25 years I have taught many people how to lose weight. It’s really pretty simple but it can be challenging.

Let’s look at the 4 simple keys to weight loss. Do these 4 things and you will learn how to lose weight. SIMPLE. It requires action on your part but doesn’t everything that we want to do require action? Yeah. It does.

KEY #1: The correct mindset.

EVERYTHING we do in life, and get from life, starts with the way we think. The way that we think determines the way that we act. The actions that we take determine what we do in life and what we get from life.

It all starts with the way with think.

Stop blaming everyone else for you problems. Take responsibility and hold yourself to a higher standard.

If you think that there is an easy method you are wrong. Be determined and be prepared for a long hard road that WILL BE WORTH IT. It all starts with mindset. If you have the right one the obstacles aren’t going to matter. If your mindset sucks then you will never lose the weight long term. NEVER.

Change the way you think before you do anything else.

KEY #2: Eat right.

This is the one that most people focus on too much. It’s a piece of the puzzle for sure but you can’t go crazy.

Most people make the mistake of going on a diet. WRONG ANSWER.

Most people decide to cut out all kinds of foods. WRONG ANSWER.

Most people decide to eat less to lose weight. WRONG ANSWER.

People make these incorrect decisions and thus most people (I’ve read it’s as high as 95%) gain all the lost weight back…and then some.

So what can you do when it comes to eating to lose weight?

  1. Eat 5-6 times per day.
  2. Never be hungry.
  3. Don’t drink your calories.
  4. Eliminate white bread and white pasta.
  5. If you have sugary snacks do it before 2 pm.

If you can implement these little habits you will have long term weight loss success. If you want to learn how to lose weight and keep it off you need to develop habits that you are going to keep for the rest of your life. THAT IS THE KEY!

Key # 3: Move you body.

Do you exercise each and every day?

If not then you need to start NOW.

“Exercise” means different things for different people. The key is to be progressive and to operate with some degree of intensity. Do different things and make sure some of those things are hard and what you do makes you tired.

No, going to the gym week after week and doing abs and 20 minutes on the treadmill isn’t going to help you long term.

People hate to exercise (CLICK HERE TO READ MORE DETAILS ABOUT MY OPINION in a recent blog post) partially because they don’t get results. You need to do exercises that help you get results. We are going to dive deep into this on the web class as well.

Key #4: Supplement your body.

I’m not talking about the latest pill, potion or fad. Seriously. I’m taking a cleanse every few months, a good multi, an omega and a probiotic. For those that are athletic or competitive or simply want to feel better about working out we encourage some sort of post workout recovery or protein shake. It’s up to you to decide but we encourage people to buy all their supplements from one company and to keep it basic. Don’t get crazy and all cutting edge. Supplement to fill in the gaps. About 15 years ago used to write articles for the local paper on health and wellness. One of my favorite articles was titled, “The Simplicity of Weight Loss”. I honestly and truly believe that weight loss is simple. It’s not easy… but it’s simple.

If you take time to dial in each of these areas then you will lose weight. If you neglect one or more of the areas then you are in deep trouble. You will continue the lose and gain cycle and your health will never improve.
