What is the biggest health issue facing our country today? I think it is apathy.

The obvious answer would be obesity or lack of exercise of quality of food or video games or any other number of surface factors. Its really a softball question that most anyone could knock out of the park but I see things different. 

Let me to explain.

Here is a definition of apathy that I found online, “ lack of interest or concern; indifference”.

Truly this is the problem.

People just don’t care or they just don’t see it as a problem.

We live is a society where it is OK to be unhealthy. We have created a sympathetic view of people that are unhealthy by accepting excuses and by coddling to the weak among us.

I don’t mean to sound harsh but people just don’t give a crap. People blame their parents, or the educational system, or the health care system, or fast food, or GMO’s, or the drug companies….

Get the point?

The real problem is that we are suffering from a disease called apathy. We just don’t care. We have given in and quit trying to become more.  It’s just to hard and it’s OK.

It’s not OK.

It’s not OK to be overweight and unhealthy and it is not OK to blame your obesity or heart disease on anyone but yourself. 

THAT is apathy.

The problem will continue, unabated, until we stop being apathetic and start getting pissed off.

I have been a personal trainer for a long time. I have seen so many more people that are apathetic then I have seen that are pissed off. For every person that gets going on a fitness journey there are 10 that quit because it is “OK to be fluffy” or they “don’t have time” or any other myriad excuses.

To me it is clear. Our herd mentality is of acceptance and blame. 

Until we stop accepting lack or motivation and lack of effort to be better and start expecting more of ourselves then our health will continue to suck.

Apathy. It’s all around you.  Just look and you will see.

What can you do?

Simple. Start with the champion in the mirror.

Expect more.

Expect more.

Do more.

Be more.
