A healthy life is a great life

A couple of weeks ago I heard someone say something that, ahem, rattled me a little. I don’t get rattled easy so this is really saying something.

As a matter of fact it pissed me off a little bit.

There was a group conversation about eating healthy and living healthy and the broad statement was made, “You mean to be healthy you have to have no life…

Oh no you DID NOT just say that. [*wagging finger*]


I have a couple of things to say about that. Oh, know, shocker, right?

For one, living a healthy life or a fit life really is the BEST life. As a matter of fact, it’s a GREAT life. It a longer, more productive life and it’s a life where you not only give back more but you are able to give more of yourself to others.

Is having a “life” really that much better? What does that mean anyway?

The person that said that smokes cigarettes and goes out partying and drinking all the time. She is in her 40’s. Is that a better life then I have being healthy and fit and watching what I eat?

I guess it comes down to perception. I think that living the fit live is a GREAT way to live. I feel good and am a very productive member of society. I never go to the doctor, I don’t burden the health system and I inspire others. Don’t I need to go out to eat all the time and party like I’m 21 to have a “life”?

That’s a big fat negative.

My life is great and empowering. No life? That’s bullshit.

When I was 22 years old I drank too much and partied a little to hard but I left that life when it belongs…in my early 20’s. Today I go out to eat once every couple of weeks and I may even have 2 beers….3 on occasion. Here’s the deal though: I don’t do this often. I don’t get drunk and I don’t do drugs. Honestly I have never once even tried a drug. Not once! I wouldn’t dream of smoking and I have never tried that either.

On a Friday night I play cards with the kids and go to bed at the same time as during the week. I get up early on Saturdays to work out. I meet my friends on Sunday afternoon to work out, not because I have to, but because I WANT TO.

Does this mean that I have no life?

Actually it means that I have my life and I like it.

If you think that transitioning to a fit life will mean that you will be miserable because you will have “no life” you are WRONG. A fit life is a good thing. You can still have fun. You can still eat what you want. Heck, you will live a lot longer so you will have more time to do the things that you want to do.

Don’t be scared that your life will suck. Your life will be BETTER, your life will mean more, your life will be GREAT.
